I think besides wanting to raise his family Mike considered their touring days behind them and just wasn't up for touring anymore
in retrospect they probably could have done things better re getting in Patrick for the tours and on records but with Mike still contributing songs and also appearing on their albums - today in the internet age that would be SO much easier of course - but there obviously was at least a failing of communication between Mike and the band back in 1978 and failings on each side which led to Mike's legal action and some acrimony then - it seems that is now 'water under the bridge' as Ray put it, and their later falling out with Patrick Moraz rather put things into perspective somewhat....
today we hear of 'issues' between Justin and John simmering away etc...it's such a pity (as George Harrison sang) when musicians and creative people you love start bickering between themselves, for fans it's very soul destroying and it seems to occur in most bands stories...
It IS a pity indeed to hear about our favorite musicians bickering amongst themselves. The Beatles did it rather publicly in the "Let It Be" film didn't they? And although I enjoyed seeing the creative side of that film, it was hard to watch in some places. Bands like the Beatles and the Moodies are like old friends to us, aren't they? You somehow just need them to get along with each other. But like a family, there will always be disagreements and squabbles.Actually, when you think of it, it's miraculous that the three Moodies are still touring together. It MUST be the love of playing the music, as the guys always say.
