Just noticed the map of Lydiard Park says, "ancestral home of the St. John family, rescued from ruin by the Swindon Corporation in 1943." That's just a few years before our hero was born. So glad they restored the grounds so that Tuesday Afternoon could be written... :)
One thing I really like about England is that they value these stately old estates and homes and preserve many of them. As you say, Tuesday Afternoon may have never been written otherwise!
