And they've had to, at times, cook over hot fires to feed the troops. There are the occasional Calamity Jane types who escape the heavy skirts and wear buckskin instead. I think they're the lucky ones!

No, I haven't been eating as much icecream as I used to. I really miss the icecream socials we used to have. Do you remember the little girl that volunteered to help us at the icecream social? I see her and her family at the publix grocery store here and there. She is in high school now and is thinking about going into nursing.

This is really intriguing....so I went to http://maps.google.com/ and took a look around: If you put this address in, you can get an aerial view of the fort: 13 Castillo Dr, Saint Augustine, FL, United States Very cool place!

The harbor is literally feet away from the main road through town. This road and the other streets get flooded very quickly with any major rain storm. Jessica, do you still have your photos of the flooded areas? It's quite a sight! The town seems to take it in stride, though. Sooner or later everything dries out and then it's back to business as usual. The year that I lived there, we experienced something like four hurricanes and one storm that did as much damage as the hurricanes -- and this all was in a two-month period. I do think we were protected from the worst of it by being a bit looped in. There was a lot of damage throughout the area (hundreds of downed trees and such), but the old structures in the city held strong.
