One of the movies along with line that I love is The Truman Show. The movie's plot is that Truman (played by Jim Carey) has lived his entire life in a completely constructed reality-all of the people in his world are actually actors playing roles in a television show broadcast to the rest of the world outside of Truman's artificial world, called "The Truman Show." Truman gradually begins to discover the truth of his situation and escapes from his artificial world, as the rest of the television viewers outside watch and cheer him on. Posts: 8199 07/04/09 06:55:36 Admin	"Pleasantville" was an old black-and-white television show that took place in an idyllic town where everything was always perfect-the basketball team never lost a game, the only work for the local firemen was to rescue cats from trees because there were never any real fires, etc. Teenager David was a huge fan of the show, and then one day, during a fight with his twin sister Jennifer, their TV remote broke and the two of them found themselves actually living in Pleasantville, in black-and-white like all the other townsfolk. But gradually, they inadvertently begin to change the town as they accidentally fail to stick to the storyline of the TV show, and the town and people slowly change into color. As people begin to feel passion, whether positive (love) or negative (anger), they become "colored" and are ostracized by those who remain in black-and-white. Ultimately there is a trial, and passions are so raised that the entire town becomes colored, and the people finally discover the rest of the world. �

Posts: 8199 07/04/09 07:11:40 Admin	Crash is a movie about bigotry and racial stereotyping, and it shows that everyone harbors these attitudes. The lives of a number of different people are interweaved in the movie, so that you see, for example, that the despicable policeman who feels up a black woman when he pulls her car over is also, in his personal life, dealing with a father who has chronic pain from a urinary tract infection; he cannot get much help from his father's social worker because of his racially-tinged comments to the woman. The housewife of the district attorney doesn't trust the locksmith who changes the locks on her doors because he is Hispanic and has tattoos--he must be a gang member, in her mind. When the locksmith goes home you see him try to protect his young daughter from an attempted gun shooting. Everyone is shown both as a victim and a perpetrator of prejudice. It's an excellent, thought-provoking movie.

Posts: 115 07/05/09 07:30:35	Crash was one to open eyes about racism. Grand Torino was another one. Having lived near Detroit during the riots it was a real eye opener for me back then. Momento is one about a man that has short term memory loss and has to write everything down. He is searching for his past and does anything to try and help himself but because of his memory loss it is challenging. This is one movie you have have to see at least twice before it starts to click. Being a Sci Fi geek I loved the movie Contact based on Carl Sagan's book. It is dated now but 2001 was a real mind bender when it first came out. The Sci Fi channel is having a Twighlight Zone marathon this weekend and one I always remembered was To Serve Man. Aliens land on Earth and promise a better life for all humans. People become convinced and go with them to their home planet. A few scientists are trying to decode the aliens writing and still tons of people are going off to this other planet. Finally the writing is decoded and just as another ship is taking off one of the scientists calls to the others to get off just as the hatch is closing that the aliens book is actually a cook book on how to serve man. Yikes.

Posts: 9480 07/09/09 11:54:52 Archivist and Board Owner	Bizarre. I have all of these films. Truman show (1998) and ED TV (1999) are two of my favorites. I like the idea of bringing popular culture into film and satirizing it. One less obvious film that does this really well is Idiocracy. If you take Judge Judy, Wrestling, monster truck rallies, a lot of other popular culture, and a bit of science fiction (aka Demolition Man), you get a surprisingly biting view of the dumbing down of future society. This film appears to be just stupid on the surface but has a good message. Another interesting film was The Net--an oracle before its time. Last Edited By: Taranberk 07/09/09 11:57:05. Edited 1 time.
